In November 2005, the Italian TV show Voyager showed a painting owned by self-proclaimed psychic Gustavo Rol from Turin. It depicted a noble lady, Teresa Rovere, wearing nineteenth century garments and a somber frown. However, when the painting was seen through the viewfinder of a camera the mouth seemed to curl upward, forming a smile. Nothing could be seen with the naked eye and the film recorded through the camera did not show anything unusual. On the show, it was claimed that this was an unexplainable phenomenon, maybe an after-life paranormal experiment of the late Rol. In reality, it was a simple optical effect due to the round shape of the viewfinder, the lens of which tends to narrow and make rounder anything seen through it: thus, the coronet on Teresa’s hair seems to bend downward just like the mouth appears to bend upward, creating the illusion of a smile that in reality is not there.

Specific sounds produced in the articulation satge become more meaningful when accompanied by an appropiate voice quality. Vocal ones depend prinicipally upon a steady flow of air for adequate loudness and upon the absence of hypertension in the larynx for purity of quality.

A voice may be intelligible, yet it may not be able to communicate. It may be unpleasant or- even irritating to listeners. In this section, some common types of poor voce quality including their causes and treatment will be discussed.

Analysis of Voices
In correcting voice quality, always start by listening critically to the voices of others. Then describe these voices acccording to type of quality and degree of severity. With this, analyze and critically evaluate your own voice. To do this record your voice, so that you can hear it as others do. This recording can also used to measure your improvement. However, as you listen to a recording of your own voice or another voice, you must remember that even with the best recording equipment certain distortions occur. Allowance for such distortions must be given in judging your own voice. One way of evaluating a recording of your own voice is to compare it with another recording someone whom you know and admire. Listen objectively to both recorded voices and evaluate them according to quality, pitch, intensity, and rate.
